History Of Womens Education History Essay Over the past twenty years women have made substantial educational progress. The large difference between the education levels of women and men that were evident in the early 1970s have essentially disappeared. Females are more likely than males to attend college after high school and are as likely to graduate with a Masters degree. These gains in educational attainment are due to womens fights for these rights throughout history. These struggles date back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, The Middle Ages, and extend to the Education Amendment Act of 1972 and the Womens Educational Equity Act (WEEA) of 1974 in the United States. In ancient Rome upper class women received education. They were better educated than lower class women and lower class men. They increased their chance for success in managing money, real estate, business affairs and political interest by practicing reading and writing skills. Very few children received an education before the early Republic, but after 300 B.C. child education increased. Children seven to eleven from families who could afford it went to a private elementary school called a ludus. It was a room, most of the time, in the back of a store. There was a teacher who taught Latin reading and writing skills, and arithmetic to only twelve students at a time. At eleven years old, girls either stopped going to school or continued their education at home by their parents or tutors. Most of these girls were getting ready for marriage which usually occurred at fourteen or fifteen years old. Fathers wanted their daughters to receive an education in order to attract a husband that had a higher societal position. However, other fathers just thought education was the right thing to do. Musonius Rufus, who was a philosopher and a teacher in the first century A.D., said: Women have received from the gods the same ability to reason that men have. We men employ reasoning in our relations with others and so far as possible in everything we do, whether it is good or bad, or noble or shameful. Likewise women have the same senses as men, sight, hearing, smell, and all the rest. The Middle Ages or medieval period, 500 ­Ã‚ ­ 1400, began when the great civilizations of Greece and Rome had fallen. In medieval society womens education depended on their socioeconomic class. Women were thought to be inferior to men and were thus treated that way. Educational opportunities for women were slight. Girls were only allowed to receive basic instruction from their mothers, while boys could go off to be tutored, go to church ran schools, or join a guild or burger school to learn an occupation. Most of the schools that girls attended in the Middle Ages were associated with the convents. Girls of the peasant class were taught good manners and domestic chores within the family. Noble born women acquired their education in palace schools and were expected to learn household chores, music, conversation, and the roles appropriate to the code of chivalry. However, in Frankish Medieval Society women were just as educated as men and many women were just as educated as their husbands (Ruth Dean and Melissa Thompson). The most educated women in this period were the nuns. They educated girls in singing, reading, and writing. They also taught them domestic chores like cooking and weaving clothing. Womens education is the greatest reason why women were able to fight for a voice in politics. As more and more females in Europe during the eleventh and twelfth centuries became educated they were able to fight for higher positions politically. Women were also able to take part in intellectual life as listeners, readers and writers. Although education only took place within the wealthier families with private teachers this was a big step in the right direction for womens rights. The women of the middle ages were the first to appreciate a small amount of the freedom in education that women can enjoy today. In the 1800s, the time period before the American Civil War, there were womens rights advocates, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony who spoke out for womens educational and political rights. Susan B. Anthony went to a local district school where a teacher declined to teach her long division because she was female and not male. Her father took her out of that school and homeschooled her. He and a teacher educated her and taught her all about womens equality. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, unlike most women of her generation, was formally educated. She went to a co-ed school where she could compete with the opposite sex academically and intellectually. Stanton and Anthony both fought for womens political and social equality. They spoke out against racial and gender inequality and also supported the temperance movement. Catharine Esther Beecher was a teacher and a great contributer in the development of education for teachers and formal education for women in America. She was tutored at home until she was ten years old. She then was sent to a private school where she was only allowed a limited education. This made her want to learn more, so she taught herself the subjects that werent offered to her. She wanted to provide the same educational opportunities to other women. Catharine believed women needed a greater education in order to raise their children to be good citizens, to teach Christian values, and to train other women to become teachers. She wrote a lot on the subject of education for women and girls. She stressed intellectual stimulation, moral education, and physical health. In 1823 she opened the Hartford Female Seminary, and taught there until 1831. She believed that women instead of men should be teachers because they have instinctive qualities that would make them better at it. She felt that women had greater potential if they were educated, and this was the career path that would make them socially useful at a time where opportunities for women were limited. Women are natural teachers because its just a component of their motherly role. Being a teacher would make women financially independent and help shape future generations. The Education Amendment Act of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in a public education stating: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance (United States Code Section 20) Also, the Womens Educational Equity Act of 1974 (WEEA), was the changing point in womens education. Thirty three percent of women twenty five to twenty nine attained a bachelors degree or higher in 2007, which exceeded that of men in this age range (twenty six percent). Twenty eight percent of women twenty five and older obtained a bachelors degree or more as of 2007. This rate was up eleven percentage points from twenty years earlier (United States Census). These statistics were only made possible due to women in history that fought for these rights, or people of previous generations who understood how important it was for women to receive an education.

Online Education Essay

Every parent’s dream is to influence their children with life skills that will guide them to success in the future. In most cases, parents usually work full time jobs to achieve extra income to save for their children college costs. A college education could very well be that â€Å"cherry on top of the ice cream† for parents, and give them a moment to relax and finally take a breather. Today we find young adults with jobs working as hard their parents once did. This made it difficult to balance both work and school for them. In some instances, parents are usually the child’s first role model and teach them to set the standard for a good foundation of direction and determination. Students have been finding different methods to make it work by balancing out their work and school schedules. For example, working various schedules has been difficult, to include, morning, midday or twilight shifts just to add school, in their schedule. The burden in juggling work, school and personal time resulted in school taking a back seat and leaving no room to attend a traditional classroom. Distance learning has opened the door to the education community, businesses and private companies in many ways to assist those by introducing classroom instruction via online. Online education has boomed the past few years and has given individuals the chance to further their education. Priorities have once again changed, and the percentage of online courses taken has risen. Nonetheless, there is still argument whether a learner can obtain the information online, vice receiving proper classroom education. The goal of this paper is to address the benefits of distance learning are to identify the values, soundness and impact of online education. The future of online education has already impacted us in some way. Can one recall ever reading anything off your computer, smart phone or tablet? That is right! Believe it or not one has been educating themselves via the internet already. The tools are there and why not take advantage of a higher education with a college and/or university. In the article, Tom Snyder stated that, â€Å"lifelong learning must now be a part of everyone’s career plan†. I could not agree more with that statement. Web-based programs are on a rise and to educate oneself in an online environment is a significant benefit. There is always online training that your job requires one to complete for career advancement, without having a web based education one will not be able to get the required training needed for promotion. Online education is similar to what web-based training has to offer. It has the same goal in pushing out the information to such student, and it primarily depends on what the student is willing to learn. For students to have success while taking an online course, they should be determine and motivated. Even though online education is a self paced class, one can get overwhelmed and fall behind quickly. Instructors are answering questions online when students may have a problem. They will have to become more involved with the students by interacting on a one on one basis vice the classroom setting. The traditional classroom will always be there, and some may prefer it, but online learning has many benefits that cannot get passed up. In the Marine Corps, its main focal point is to be tactfully and technically proficient in their everyday duties. In the article, Samuel Ellis captures the big picture and identifies importance of being vigilant around your surroundings and what to do during an incident involving an active shooter. A key point that Brad Plumer wrote in February was that, â€Å"there have been 43 mass shootings in 25 states over the past four years – or nearly one per month†. The Marine Corps took notice, and it was not too long that something had to get done. Marine net is a distance learning tool that allows Marines, civilian employees and contractors the ability to gain and attain information via online education. According to Pete Russett, director of Mission Assurance Branch, â€Å"The shooting at Fort Hood and other similar tragedies led to this training†. Although this requisite requires your full attention to improve your experience on procedures for active shooters, it also assures that we can be familiar with the procedures of an active shooter. To train the number of Marines and civilians in a short amount of time would have taken long in a face to face classroom. However, Marine net bridged that gap and has established the ability to push out information and instruct everyone in a timely manner. Some may refer to online education as â€Å"false education† by not receiving the proper education in a tradition classroom. The article, Online Education May Transform Higher Ed, Brian Burnsed wanted to let the reader know that online education is happening throughout all colleges and universities and not leaving anytime soon. There were interesting facts that shook the online education movement. For example, change is constant and never-ending with innovations making it easier for students to access the internet for online courses. According to Matthew Tabor’s article, Louis Soares said, â€Å"A disruptive innovation always starts out at a lower quality,† he says. â€Å"[But], if you take that for-profit energy out of higher education, online [education] would not have grown the way it has in the last 10 years. † There has been an increase of student enrollment for online programs at these institutes. In the past, one was able to receive an associates and/or bachelors degree at smaller institutions that were strictly online courses. The bigger named universities and colleges have taken notice and started to implement newer online programs for potential students. This strategy ensured that students were, in fact, choosing these recognized institutes for online education. In Brian Burnsheds’ article, Richard Garrett, managing director at research firm, said, â€Å"We’re at the beginning of elite schools starting to take online seriously†. The increase of mobile technology has jumped start the revolution of online education. Students are far more familiar with computers that ever before. There are many changes that would have to be developed to create an online program that assists the instructor and teaches the student at the same time. Will there have to be personnel changes? Would the institute hire online only Professors? These are some of the factors to creating an effective online program, but the need of online education has increased and must be solved. At the end of the day, there are more positives than negatives for adding more online courses; it is just inevitable that students will take an online course sometime in the near future. Online education has come a long way to make it easier for students to achieve a higher education. It can be time consuming and beneficial at the same time. for the individual that is organized, determined, and motivated to self educate themselves. Many are skeptical that an instructor is not teaching, but just pushing information over the internet to the course. It is the responsibility of the student to ask questions; to improve his online learning experience. The rising demand for online courses will continue to climb and be as effective as or better than a traditional classroom. Though, it can all change with the intentions the institution has with the visualization and authenticity of their online education programs.

Becoming a Nurse Essay

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the different levels of nursing available to be able to work in the healthcare field, what their job description for each level entails, and determining do they really have what it takes to become a good nurse. INTRODUCTION Attention Getter: First off let me say â€Å"I Love My Job†. I knew from a childhood age that I wanted to be a nurse. There is nothing better than the great feeling that comes over you knowing you are able to comfort, encourage and instruct a stranger in their time of need; Knowing that you have touched their lives, or a family members life, in a way that they will never forget. Audience motivation: A lot of individuals become or think they want to become a nurse because of the pay scale. They believe it is an â€Å"easy† way to make a living. I am here to inform you of the other side of nursing; you know the one no one lets you in on until the first day on the job. Credibility: I have always been a nurturer by nature, even in childhood with friends, siblings and at points in time feeling as if I was the parent and protector of my mother. I find great interest in certain illnesses, their causes and their cures, being able to provide informative information to patients, their family members, and the general public, and to bring awareness of issues, cures and treatments to the forefront. Purpose: I am going to place this question in your thoughts; â€Å"Am I considering a career in nursing due to the prospect of an easy salary, or do I truly have the heart and personality that is required to be a success in this field.† Preview: Today I am going to outline the multiple levels of nursing certificates, licenses and degrees available. I will discuss the job description and care you will be expected to provide to the  patient at each level. Finally I will discuss the bottom line; you know the one factor that influences over half of all individuals to become a nurse. [Transition]: Let us begin with touching on the levels available to work in while employed in the nursing arena of healthcare. BODY I. The field of nursing offers many opportunities for individuals who are considering this as a career move. Keeping in mind no matter what level you choose in nursing it will be a very demanding and rewarding career to participate in. A. There are different levels of nursing starting at the beginning with a CNA, PCT, LPN, RN, and eventually ending with ARNP. Certified Nursing Assistant- referred to a CNA. Working in hospitals, long term facilities, assisted living centers, adult day care centers, home health agencies and other medical, community and residential settings. A Certified Nursing Assistant is authorized to perform specific duties to assist nurses. CNAs work closely with patients to help provide care for their basic physical and emotional needs, and may also perform vital signs and administer medications â€Å"if† licensed to do so. BODY (Continued) Licensed Practical Nurse- referred to as an LPN. helps physicians and registered nurses (RNs) care for patients. They have the teaching and knowledge to perform routine nursing duties. LPNs also schedule appointments, maintain patient records, and perform clerical style duties. Available positions can be found in hospitals, nursing homes, and multiple health care institutions, and private homes. Registered Nurse- referred to as an RN. You treat patients and help in their rehabilitation, provide advice and emotional support to patients’ families. Many registered nurses are general duty nurses who focus on the overall care of the patents. In addition to patient care they are placed in positions of supervising LPNs and CNAs, nursing aides and orderlies. They hold responsibility for scheduling of nurse staffing and patient assignments to other nursing based on that nurse’s experience and abilities. Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner- referred to ARNP practice advanced n ursing in one of four specialized areas, including Certified Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Nurse Practitioners are licensed to practice independently without direct supervision. Nurse Practitioners work in a variety of settings to include private practice, hospitals, ambulatory care centers, public health departments, school based health clinics and other settings. B. There are multiple work shifts available to all levels of nursing, which makes this field appealing to many people. Eight hour shifts are generally available within the office settings of private practice facilities. This shift generally runs 08:00 am to 5:00 pm. Twelve hour shifts are the general guideline that majority of hospitals schedule by in today’s time. These shifts normally run between 07:00 am until 7:00 pm, or 7:00 pm until 07:00 am. Transition: Now let’s move on to actual descriptions of their individual positions. II. Each level of certificate or degree contains different responsibilities and requirements from job to job, but we will primarily speak of the general standards. CNA- V ital signs assist with or totally perform personal care of each patient, documenting in chart graphs the patient intake and output for a particular time frame, and in some instances performing non-evasive procedures such as Foley catheter insertion, and dressing changes. As a CNA you are more than likely the first point of contact with a patient during your shift, you will spend majority of your time somewhat catering to the patient. You will be supervised by most often an RN and occasionally an LPN depending on the setting. LPN- includes a lot of the above mentioned duties along with medication administration, starting and discontinuing intravenous access, charting full assessments on your patient during beginning of each shift and periodically throughout the shift depending on the status of your patient. Preparing patient for scheduled procedures including ensuring that all proper consent forms are signed and witnessed, administering any type of prep that may have been ordered by the physician. Ensuring that the patient medical record is kept up to date and assisting the physician with any questions or needs he may have in reference to you patient. You will be supervised by an RN. RN- as mentioned in the other two categories you will be responsible for all of the above duties and additional duties. These may include: Mentoring other nurses new to the field or just to your area of specialty, scheduling of your s hift staff, assigning specific patients to specific nurses depending on their level of skill, managing Code situations  in crises and administering certain medication that are governed and cannot be administered by the above mentioned positions. Answering to physicians throughout your shift in reference to patient care, record keeping and scheduling of orders, tests or procedures their patient is in need of. BODY (Continued) ARNP- in this position you are eligible to work independently as well as alongside a physician on a daily basis. You are allowed to write specific orders for tests, medication and procedures for patient with the understanding that a physician will follow behind and co-sign these orders. ARNP’s can and do manage and run independent medical offices while a physician maybe working at the hospital, in the OR, at another clinic. ARNP’s often cover call periods for the physician they work for taking calls throughout the day and night from patients in need. Transition: Keeping in mind that all of the above positions are critical in the overall picture of the healthcare system from a nursing perspective. We have covered the levels of certificates and degrees in nursing now let’s address the bottom line topic. III. This is a topic that causes a lot of individuals to make a decision to become a nurse without truly investigating the duties and responsibilities of someone in the nursing field. It also is a topic that blinds a lot of individuals from assessing their own personality, patience and ability to perform these tasks. CNA- pay scale for the CNA varies depending on the type of facility of which you are employed. Base starting pay is around $8.92 and up to $11.87 according to research posted by www.payscale.com. LPN- pay scale for an LPN varies depending on the type of facility of which you are employed. Base starting pay is $14.09 and up to $20.90 according to research posted by www.payscale.com. RN- pay scale for the RN varies depending on the type of facility of which you are employed. Base starting pay is $20.98 and up to $29.55 according to research posted by www.payscale.com. ARNP- pay scale for the ARNP is based on an annual salary rather than an hourly rate, and again it depends on the type of facility and specialty you practice in. Base starting pay is $65,924 and up to $93,341. CONCLUSION Summary: Taking into account the information I have covered here today,  and considering the salaries I have quoted are all beginning salaries fresh out of school, do you think you have what it takes to make a â€Å"Good† nurse. When I say â€Å"Good† nurse I am speaking of a person who performs their job putting all of the skills they have learned to use, working from their heart and honestly loving their job and the people they care for. An â€Å"OK† nurse is one who is there for the dollar, they are disturbed by the patient complaints, the repetitiveness of their duties and the strenuous demands placed on nursing on a day to day basis. If you are an â€Å"OK† nurse you will be subjected to the term â€Å"BURN OUT† quicker than you will ever begin to enjoy the career path you have invested in. Refocus: In making your decision to become a nurse take into consideration all of the factors that have been presented here today. Truly make this decisio n based on a life time goal and long range plan. It is a demanding, a giving and rewarding profession and there is a need for what we call truly â€Å"Good† nurses. An Examination of Similes in the Iliad - and how Homers Use of Them Affected the Story In the Iliad, Homer finds a great tool in the simile. Just by opening the book in a random place the reader is undoubtedly faced with one, or within a few pages. Homer seems to use everyday activities, at least for the audience, his fellow Greeks, in these similes nearly exclusively. When one is confronted with a situation that is familiar, one is more likely to put aside contemplating the topic and simply inject those known feelings. This would definitely be an effective tactic when used upon the people of Homers day. Later in Book Five there is a great dichotomy of similes. First, Hera comes down flying like turtledoves in eagerness to help the Argives. followed by a scene surrounding Diomedes where hi s men are fighting like lions or wild boars. Both of these have their own respective importance. There is probably no more revered avian for peace and beauty than the turtledove, and applying this to Hera shows where her intentions lie. While lions and boars are notoriously vicious creatures, sure to raise a hackle or two on a Greek reader, and when exercised on Diomedes it brings their ferocity home. The interesting thing here is the contrast between the two. This is another example of how the Greeks are made to look like animals. In Book Ten Nestor comments on a set of horses that Odysseus is ushering, won by Diomedes through killing some Trojans, that they are like sunbeams. A very short, and odd, description for horses. One is reminded of Apollo and his kinship with his chariot, often referred to as racing across the heavens.
